RAF Museum History:

The history of Royal Air Force Museum goes back to 1911 when the current museum site was a prominent portion of RAF Hendon station. It is still recognised as one of the first civilian airfields. Being an aviation forerunner, Claude Grahame-White acquired the rights of the site in 1911.

On 15th of November 1972, Queen Elizabeth II led the inaugural ceremony of Royal Air Force Museum in London (at Colindale) for the public.

Today, RAF Museum in London attracts hundreds of tourists and locals every day. You can also witness the reconstructed interior of the Grahame-White factory.

Born on 21st of August 1879 – Claude Grahame-White was an English aviation pioneer is best-known for its institutional affiliation with the Royal Air Force Museum London. Grahame-White was widely famous for his aviation honours, awards, and recognition. Some of which are:

  • Completed first flight between London and Manchester under 24 hours and won £10,000
  • Won the first prize of £1,000 for Aggregate Duration in flight
  • Applauded for landing his Farman biplane near the White House, USA
